SAIL-ability
The use of sailing and water based activities can be a therapeutic medium in rehabilitation and the promotion of physical and mental well-being. Sailing for the ‘diversely able’ provokes a sense of total immersion in nature as well as an extraordinary challenge to overcome the marginalisation often brought about by disability and social exclusion. It gives the opportunity to experience an open environment and a relationship with the boat and the sea/water.
Acquiring the operational knowledge and technical skills, learning to make choices in handling the boat according to the conditions, knowing how to gauge the wind, the sea, and working with diversely able others can restore ‘normality’ in a level playing field where everyone is equally valuable in achieving a common goal.
This sense of integration can be achieved by just engaging people in this recreational and restorative activity, led by an experienced skipper who has also worked as a practitioner and educator in the field of health and social work for decades and can use this medium as a therapeutic environment.
We offer leisure/therapy trips as well as practical courses which aim to give choice and can facilitate both healing and learning towards technical accomplishment.
